BELIEVER’S KIT: #2- THE WORD
The next tool in the kit is the Word of God. Physical food is needed daily for life and health, and for physical nourishment. But even more do we need the spiritual food which is God’s Word for our spiritual life and health each day we live. We are nourished by the Word of God. Jesus said man shall not live by bread alone, but by the Word of God. Through God’s Word we are spiritually fed, we know Him and we enjoy a deeper walk with Him. We hear from Him through His Word, understand His mind through His Word and also find His truth and promises in the same Word. The spiritual energy and refreshment we draw from studying God’s Word each day is enormous. We can’t have that from anywhere else.
The life of a believer is a life of the Word. Daily study the Word of God. In it you have life. Be fed everyday by God’s Word. Abstinence from physical food causes weakness. Abstinence from spiritual food causes greater weakness and damage.
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. John 5:39
Adopt a pattern of study and stick with it. Never let a day pass without searching the Scriptures. You may choose to read a chapter from the New Testament in the morning and a chapter from the Old Testament at night or vice versa. This is a suggestion that works. If you can’t read as much, at least make sure you read some verses each day. As you read you open your spiritual mind for the Holy Spirit to guide you into God’s Truth and mind. In times of Bible study, God speaks to us, answers our questions and addresses situations that may be bothering us. Bible studying doesn’t necessarily mean being in a group or reading your Bible for hours. That’s okay, but God also speaks to us through the shortest of verses. Using a study guide or a daily devotional could also be helpful.
Every disciplined Christian is an early riser. If we wake up early every morning before the noise, we would have time, not only to pray but also to read God’s Word, hear from Him and be spiritually energized to face the day. So there’s no excuse. Likewise in the night, we should find time to read God’s Word before going to bed, even if it’s a few verses. Though looking into the Word of God is not only for the morning and night times. If you can find time in the course of your daily routine, please look up a verse. You will be amazed at the spiritual benefits you will reap. Most importantly, hide the Word in your heart. That should be leading us to the next in the kit which is Meditation. But before then, the following Scriptures should encourage us to study God’s Word.
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby. 1 Peter 2:2
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever. Isaiah 40:8
The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. Psalm 119:130
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. Psalm 119:18
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word. Psalm 119:16
