NFL Legend, LT Reveals the Reason Why He Decided to Star in New Christian Film
“God Bless the Broken Road,” a new Christian film detailing the heart-wrenching story of a widowed military wife and her young daughter, is set to premiere on September 7th. The movie includes a number of well-known faces including hit singer Jordin Sparks and television actress Robin Givens.
One unexpected familiar face in the film is NFL legend LaDainian “LT” Tomlinson. Spending the majority of his memorable sports career with the San Diego Chargers, Mr. Tomlinson was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame last year. After his God-centered Hall of Fame speech, the star running back became a household name for Christian football fans.
Transitioning from being a football Hall of Famer to making his acting debut was a major career shift for the star player; however, it was all a part of God’s plan for his life. LT revealed the powerful reason why he decided to become involved in “God Bless the Broken Road” in an exclusive interview with Faith Family America writer Alex Olsen.
“It really was a gentleman [Gary Lewis] that I have known for some time now...who is an executive producer on the film. I hadn’t talked to Gary in at least a year and a half; he called me out of the blue and said, ‘We’re casting for this film. There’s a pastor role that we need to fill and I thought of you. Before you tell me to screw off, just listen to me,’” Tomlinson said with a chuckle.
The NFL star was immediately drawn into the film because of its role in supporting the Disabled American Veterans. The DAV is a charitable organization that helps U.S. vet families with various needs. And as soon as Tomlinson read the movie script, he was moved by the inspiring story — making it impossible for him to turn down the role.
“For me, and all of us really, we’re connected with military folks from all over this country. Whether it’s a personal family member or one of our close personal friends...we all go through that,” LT said. “The great thing about this film is it inspires us to do more and to help our veterans. The fact that they’re helping disabled American vets. It’s incredible to have that type of heart. You talk about God and the spirit being inside someone, the person that does things like that, they definitely have the spirit of God inside them.”
Additionally, LT felt strongly that this move in his career was a calling from God.
“Right away, I really related to the pastor role just because of my upbringing — from the small country town, small church, a family-oriented church, you know everyone in the church. I just said, ‘Maybe it’s meant for me to do this. Maybe God wants me to do this. So I’ll give it a shot.' That’s really how it came about.”
Although it has not been confirmed if LT will officially star in other films after “God Bless the Broken Road,” the professional football player did reveal he has been cast another role already. In his words, [acting] is “not a one-time thing.” We can likely expect to see his name in other faith-based films moving forward.Be sure to check out LT and his co-stars in the film when it hits theatres on September 7th!
